History

In April of 1722 a group of Canary families arrived the Jumacao River shore with instructions to establish a town which they named San Luis del Principe.Once they established the firsts houses , they constructed a place to pray God. The settlers blessed the new settlement on August 25th and dedicate it to Nuestra Senora de la Inmaculada Concepcion. Humacao is known as "La Perla del Oriente" (pearl of the orient) and "La Cuidad Gris" (gray city). Humacao was founded on April, 1722 and became autonomous (town) in 1793. Humacao derives its name from a local Indian chief Jumacao. Actually, the mayor of the city is Hon. Marcelo Trujillo. He is a former basketball player of Baloncesto Superior Nacional League.
