Dedication

I want to dedicate this project to my favorite person, my daughter Alexanda Marie. She is my inspiration an engine to improve each day of my life. I admire her strenght ; she had suffer a lot during the lasts two years caused by a health condition, myasthenia gravis . Her courage taught us, her parents, how strong one needs to be facing difficulties along our life.Today, I thanks God for having her with us after a surgery from which she's recovering so fast. Xandy, I love you, hugs.

Highlights





  • Chief Jumacao was the first Taíno Chief to learn how to read and write. This fact was corroborated when he wrote a letter to the King of Spain complaining about the Governor of the island not complying with the peace treaty, and that other chiefs as well as himself were virtually prisoners of the regime. He stated also in this communication that he was a free man and capable of responding for his own acts. The King was so moved by the letter, that he ordered immediately that Puerto Rico honor the terms of the peace treaty.
  • Humacao's people nickname is "los roye huesos"(the bones grinders).
  • Some people says that the gray view of the city was due the smoke of the sugar cane centrals.
  • Off shore near Humacao is an island inhabited by Rhesus monkeys once used for scientific experiments back in the 1930s. Cayo Santiago (38 acres) host one of two field stations of the Caribbean Primate Research Center in the island.
  • Humacao is famous all over Puerto Rico for its granos, a greasy snack food which is composed of fried rice flour with cheese in its center. People have for years driven to Humacao from other cities just to taste this snack food sell in little carts all over the downtown. Locals joke about this tasteful 'fritura': el granito es EEE: engorda, estriñe y embrutece.This means that the "granos" makes you fat, constipate you, and turns you stupid.
  • On March, 2008, a new Roman Catholic diocese was established as the Fajardo-Humacao diocese. Its first bishop is Monsignor Eusebio 'Chebito' Ramos Morales, a maunabeño who was rector of the Humacao's main parish in the 1990's.

History

In April of 1722 a group of Canary families arrived the Jumacao River shore with instructions to establish a town which they named San Luis del Principe.Once they established the firsts houses , they constructed a place to pray God. The settlers blessed the new settlement on August 25th and dedicate it to Nuestra Senora de la Inmaculada Concepcion. Humacao is known as "La Perla del Oriente" (pearl of the orient) and "La Cuidad Gris" (gray city). Humacao was founded on April, 1722 and became autonomous (town) in 1793. Humacao derives its name from a local Indian chief Jumacao. Actually, the mayor of the city is Hon. Marcelo Trujillo. He is a former basketball player of Baloncesto Superior Nacional League.

Jumacao's crown, red that symbolizes the Coat of Arms and the green that represents the arrows used by the Taínos.





Coat of arms:
The coat of arms consists of two colors, gold and green. The gold represents the sun, Humacao is located in the island were the sun rises. Green symbolizes our native Indian heritage as well as the natural tropical valley where the city is located. The shield itself represents Humacao's native and Indian name origin. The small shield in the center represents the name of Humacao's Catholic Church; Dulce Nombre De Jesús. The shield was designed by Roberto Biascochea Lota in 1975 and was adopted by the Municipal Assembly that same year in November.

Geographicall facts

Humacao is located in the eastern side of the island bordered by other three cities, Yabucoa at the South , Naguabo at the North, Las Piedras at the west and the Vieques passage at the eastern side. The city has a population of 62,244 people as the 2000 US Census. The city has 13 wards. They are :Mabu ,Mambiche,Mariana, Anton Ruiz, Buena Vista, Candelero Arriba, Candelero Abajo, Catano, Collores, Junquito, Rio Abajo, Tejas, Punta Santiago. The city rivers are Humacao, AntonRuiz an Candelero. There are two cays that belongs to the city, Santiago and Batata. Other two city islands are near us Vieques and Culebra.

Natural Resources

The city has one of the greatest natural reserves in the island. The place counts with a mangroves swamp and a variety of endanger species of birds, sea turtles, crabs, between others. The Natural Reserve can be visit for ecotourism and kayaking and it has a lagoon.There is lot of natural beauties to explore in the reserve area. There are many endemic flora along the region.

Education

The owl is one of the most important symbols of the city and it is associated to intelligence.It is also the symbol of the Universidad de Humacao. There is a huge sculpture of an owl located at the main access of the town.Our city is a region of the Departamento de Educacion of the Gobierno de Puerto Rico. The city school district counts with approximately 32 different schools. There is also a precinct of the Universidad de Puerto Rico in Humacao which offers a variety of degrees and in the last year they inaugurated an articulated engineering program . This precinct's focus in sciences degrees is to supply the demand of professionals that help the island's economy plan to long terms in biotechnology. Also, there are several private schools of different levels, technical colleges and academies that offers minor degrees. Our city serves as academic center for the region cities demand.

Economy

The city depends of tourism ad has one of the most important centers of the island.Palmas del Mar, the island's largest resort, makes Humacao its home. This mega resort is composed of over 3,000 acres (12 km²) of land and occupies the entire south eastern portion of the municipal territory. The resort contains over 20 tennis courts, two world-class golf courses, miles of unspoiled beaches, several restaurants and a world class riding center. Other important economical activity of Humacao is the biotechnological and technology (Microsoft)industries.Our city has a growing economy and it can be appreciated with several shopping centers and a lot of restaurants of creole cuisine and others specialties. Many housing projects had also developed in the last years. This had brought new people to the area. The infrastructure of the city had improve in the last decade with the construction of new highways and government facilities of different kinds. We are accessible by the mayor highways of the island (Carr.#30 , # 3 and #53). This is just part of the economical activity of the area.

Sports

Humacao had been always a city that sponsor the different sports. There is a municipal gymnasium, lots of basketball courts, baseball parks,jogging and walking tracks in the different wards of the city. There are also two important teams that represents us locally .The Grises basketball team (Humacao Grays), founded in 2005, belongs to Puerto Rico's National Superior Basketball league. The Grises is a Double A class amateur baseball team that has won one championship (1951) and four sub-championships (1950, 1960, 1965 and 1967).

Festivals

Along the year the city celebrates lots of events.The Fiestas Patronales dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, the city saint patron as the catholic church beliefs, is held at the beginning of December. It has lost most of its religious content to become a popular festival with live music, food, drinks and verbenas .The Breadfruit Festival (Festival de la Pana) is celebrated during the first weekend of September. Its main theme is about the preparation of dishes whose main ingredient is breadfruit. Typical Puerto Rican music, crafts and foods as well as other cultural and sports activities can also be enjoyed in all these festivals and events.Other festivals are, Encendido de Navidad, a three day gospel music fest.It is celebrated in the Thanksgiving weekend or near it. Also there is a environmental fest, Feria Ambiental, celebrated in April. The Santa Cecilia Festival is other great celebration in town, this is the patron saint of the musicians. The city is the hometown of recognized musicians locally and around the world and the festival serves to honor the most outstanding ones.

There are some interesting points to visit in Humacao: Cityhall , Plaza de Recreo and the Catholic Church that is settled in the Plaza de Recreo, Museo Casa Roig (is managed by the Universidad de Humacao), Centro de Arte de Humacao, Astronomical Observatory (is in the facilities Universidad de Humacao Campus),Universidad de Humacao, Cacique Jumacao Monument and rest area,Refugio de Vida Silvestre, Monumento a maestro, Balneario Punta Santiago, Cayo Santiago (Isla de los monos), Hermita Guzman, Cementerio Historico, and Palmas del Mar.
